Chapter 18

Lucy splurged and bought a new blouse for her debut as a celebrity judge: green, of course. She hit the department store first but ended up finding the perfect top at Taylor Wear for Her, a ladies’ wear boutique on Richmond Road that was just getting their summer collection in. It was an interesting shop, catering to both locals and the tourists they were expecting. It had lots of heavy camping clothes on one wall, and gauzy, bright beachwear on the other. Lucy found her blouse at the back of the store where the business wear was next to a rack of scrubs and uniform blouses and pants.

She also picked up a green tie at the attached men’s shop. Since Roy hadn’t stopped her from volunteering, she’d informed him he was going to be her escort and assistant for the evening. Mickey laughed himself silly when he heard, and he volunteered to come in for a couple hours on his night off just to make sure his brother was available. Roy tried to protest, but she said since he didn’t have to eat anything, the least he could do was carry her antacids.

Lucy pulled her hair back with a thick black hairband and touched up her lip gloss before she left her room. Her ski jacket was clean and dry again. She hoped it would survive the night, but she wasn’t going to bet on it. She refused to worry about it when she could spend all her time worrying about the culinary wonders she was about to encounter.

She met Roy in the parking lot of the Schultz Middle School. They joined the crowd filing in through the main doors and followed the flow to the gymnasium, which had been decorated with green streamers. Josh Huntington greeted them at the door. “Ms. Callahan, we’re so glad you could make it. Our junior bakers are almost set up. Feel free to look around. We’ll call you and the other judges to the stage when we’re ready to begin.”

Lucy counted twenty tables, each covered with a paper St. Patrick’s Day tablecloth, decorated shamrocks, leprechauns, or pots of gold and rainbows. The children behind them were equally festooned, most of them with face paint of one of the same holiday symbols, except one little boy who’d gone for a completely green face. She saw cupcake carrying containers, two fancy cake stands, a waffle maker, and, to her confusion, a portable electric barbecue grill. She looked at Roy, hoping for an explanation, but he shrugged and moved her to the front of the room.

“Lucy, may I introduce my good friend Tripp Turner. He and his wife Habibah own the Atlas Restaurant,” Roy said.

“Oh, so we have a professional chef on the panel. Excellent. Pleased to meet you,” she said. Tripp looked like a friendly fellow and he was obviously well known in the community judging by the number of people calling out hellos to him.

“Habibah should be the judge. She’s the real genius in the kitchen.
